Butt Seam

What is a Butt Seam?

A butt seam, also known as a plain seam or closed seam, is a sewing seam created by placing the fabric edges together and stitching them with a straight stitch. In a butt seam, the fabric edges meet and align perfectly without overlapping or folding. It is a common seam type used in garment construction and sewing projects where a clean and inconspicuous seam is desired. Butt seams are often used in lightweight or delicate fabrics, as they minimize bulk and provide a smooth finish on both sides of the fabric.
